Steps to Christ Review 2 (Updated for 2020)

In my last post about Ellen G. White’s Steps to Christ, I promised to write a second part to cover the fifth to eighth chapters.

As the world struggles to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, you can find hope in the pages of this little book.

Despite being such a small book, Steps to Christ says so much that can change a person’s life.

Without much ado, let’s get to it.

Assessing Ellen White’s Most Popular Book

Steps to Christ is one of the most translated Ellen G. White books. It has been read by thousands of people across the world and has made so much impact.

From my point of view, Steps to Christ is a life-changing book that takes us through the rudiments of the Christian life.

If our lives are transformed to fit the picture of Christ’s true followers, the sorrows of life would be easier to bear. In fact, we would have the grace, ease, and strength to stand for the truth.

Under the next subheading, we’ll be looking at chapter five to chapter eight of Steps to Christ. The chapter titles are as follows:

  • Consecration
  • Faith and Acceptance
  • The Test of Discipleship
  • Growing Up into Christ

Chapter Five

As earlier mentioned, Ellen White’s Steps to Christ focuses on changing our lives and helping us establish a strong relationship with God.

In “Consecration,” we learn that change comes only when we surrender all to God. And surrendering all to God can only occur when we search for Him with all our hearts.

Have you ever had those moments when you felt so terrible about something you did wrong? How did you feel?

For me, many times, I always feel angry with myself. I would say “Can’t you just do something right for once?” Forgive the perfectionist in me.

But then, Ellen White makes it clear in this chapter that the greatest battle is the warfare against self. And the devil prefers to have us as captors.

However, we can win every battle by allowing God to heal and transform us. He won’t force you to love, accept, and obey Him. As a matter of fact, you have to make a choice.

Will you surrender to His will? Or would you rather be in 50% and out 50%?

I’m sorry. With God, it doesn’t work that way.

You Cannot Do It Alone

When I read about the story of the Israelites, I can’t but see myself in them. Doing something right this minute and going wrong the next.

Nonetheless, do you know what keeps me going? It’s an excerpt in this chapter. “There are those who profess to serve God, while they rely on their own efforts to obey His law, to form a right character, and secure salvation.”

My works cannot save me. I need to recognize what Christ has done for me and cling to it. What can I give for Him? What are you willing to give for Him?

Christ gave up all. His glory for shame. His comfort for inconvenience. His praises for insults. But then, He didn’t regret it.

Ellen G. White further adds that God will not ask us to give up things that are good for us. He only wants us to part with the things that hurt us or bring us sadness.

Trust me; you cannot walk this walk on your own. You need to consecrate your heart to him and allow him work in you. When you decide for Christ, He’ll power your desire and help you begin the new life you crave.

Chapter Six

In chapter six of Steps to Christ, “Faith and Acceptance,” Ellen White brings us closer to the steps we need to take to be in harmony with God:

  • Believe that only God can give you a new heart
  • Believe that He can take your sins away
  • When you pray, believe he hears you
  • Come as you are; don’t wait till you’re perfect
  • Don’t doubt when you ask for forgiveness.

Have you ever struggled with making a decision that you knew was right for you? I have.

I try to exercise every morning. I try to be faithful. But I have this thing with being inconsistent. And I pray every day for the grace to get more serious.

But I just don’t pray about exercising every day. I equally take the necessary steps to get back into my workout mode, even if it means starting small.

Yes, that’s what this is about. You belong to God. He bought you with a price. So, there’s a lot of value on you. And if you’ve been going wrong for a long time now, it’s not too late to turn back.

Now is the best time to reach for holiness. And yes, you can be holy.

Don’t think that God forgives just some people and the others get to suffer. No. Not at all!

Ellen White says in this chapter, “Do not wait to feel that you are made whole, but say, “I believe it; it is so, not because I feel it, but because God has promised.”

She further adds on page 55, “Put away the suspicion that God’s promises are not meant for you. They are for every repentant transgressor.”

From my experience, I can tell you that when the doubts come, I only look up and say, “Christ redeemed me. He loves me and will help me to live like Him.”

And I get strength. It’s that simple.

Chapter Seven

The Test of Discipleship” emphasizes our roles as obedient followers of Christ. Ellen G. White describes how impossible it is for us to redeem ourselves.

But then, she adds that people who are new in Christ will express the fruit of the Spirit as written in God’s Word. This includes:

  1. Love
  2. Joy
  3. Peace
  4. Long-suffering
  5. Gentleness
  6. Goodness
  7. Faith
  8. Meekness
  9. Temperance
Nine fruit of the spirit, faith, Christian

All nine make up a single fruit. When you choose to follow Christ, you have to be like Him. Avoid leaning on your own abilities because you will fail.

Once again, remember that His grace empowers you to obey His law – commandments and precepts.

This is how it works:

Salvation comes by faith. Faith leads to obedience.

As a true disciple, you need to reflect your master. Ellen G. White concludes this chapter by stating that, “The more our sense of need drives us to Him and to the Word of God, the more exalted views we shall have of His character, and the more fully we shall reflect His image.”

In all, the closer we come to Christ, the better we will be.

Chapter Eight

In “Growing up into Christ,” we learn that we’re like new born babies or new seeds that have just been cultivated. We need to grow and bring forth fruit.

If we will increase, we need to be born again. We also need to germinate and be blessings to others. Only God can help us grow, and this brings us to the illustration that Christ is the living water. When you drink from him, you never thirst again.

Sounds too good to be true?

Without Him, we can do nothing. Normally, all of our efforts will amount to nothing except we consecrate ourselves to Him daily.

Be a Christ-copycat. Love like Him. Forgive like Him. Help like Him. Depend on Him.

I know this sounds somewhat unbelievable. But you cannot grow if you dwell on your faults or allow doubt to discourage you.

Ellen G. White describes Satan’s devices when she says on page 73, “Many who are really conscientious, and who desire to live for God, he too often leads to dwell upon their own faults and weaknesses, and thus by separating them from Christ he hopes to gain the victory.”

Lose yourself in Christ instead. Allow him to keep and protect all that is yours. When Christ lives in you, you will be transformed.

Now, I know this sounds odd since He’s up there in Heaven. But we know one thing for sure, and Ellen White echoes this as well, that Jesus prayed for us, and He asked that we might be one with Him, even as He is one with the Father.

Wrapping Up

In the four chapters I discussed above, we see the movement from our weaknesses and brokenness to a state of acceptance, transformation, and growth.

Does this sound like what you need? Are you seeking ways to be a better person, a better Christian? Or do you simply need to find your way back to God?

These chapters of Steps to Christ show us that we are not alone. And the best part is that in the following chapters, we will find out more about what God can do for us and what we can do for Him.

Look out for my next review of the final chapters of Steps to Christ:

  • The Work and the Life
  • A Knowledge of God
  • The Privilege of Prayer
  • What to Do With Doubt
  • Rejoicing in the Lord

What Makes Steps to Christ by Ellen G. White a Must Read? {2020}

Steps to Christ by Ellen G. White is a popular Christian book.

Have you read or heard about it? Tell me in the comments section below.

Yes, you might not have heard of this book or possessed a copy. But it’s indeed a pocket-sized book that touches the innermost parts of the human life.

Out of all Ellen G. White books, this religious book shows (and not just tells) you how to become and remain a Christian.

Taking careful steps

No doubt, we live in a world that hardly remembers the true meaning of Christianity. Yet, reading this Ellen White book will expose you to the right steps to take to learn the ways of Christ.

I’m sure you’re wondering why this book review is taking a different turn.

Well, here’s one fact:

This post presents you the Steps to Christ summary. But if you still prefer to access the Steps to Christ PDF, you can get it here.

Steps to Christ: Background to the Book Review

For the first time, I read this book in 2015, six years ago.

I had just graduated from the university and was working as a sales representative in Lagos.

Every day, when I returned from work, I spent an hour or two reading the colorful pages of this life-transforming Christian book.

It took me several months to complete the 13 chapters of this book. Now, this wasn’t because I was a slow reader.

Instead, I found that the further I got into the book, the clearer I saw myself in the presence of my Creator. I found a vivid picture of my life and saw the need to redesign my life in His ways.

Two years later, I read Steps to Christ again. Now, this wasn’t because I had forgotten its content.

No.

I had been appointed the duty of reviewing the book with some children at my local church. Gladly, I accepted this assignment and made my notes as I read.

So, trust me here; I’m writing you this book review from one of my precious journals.

Inside the Pages of Ellen G. White’s Guide Book

Steps to Christ by Ellen G. White was first published in the US in 1892 by Fleming H. Revell Company.

This book reminds us of the brevity of life and the need for human beings to get it right with God.

This thought-provoking book makes its readers question their choices, decisions, and realities, and points them in the direction of true light.

Chapters at a Glance

In Chapter 1, “God’s Love for Man,” Ellen G. White echoes the fact that nature, God’s word, and the death of Christ speak about God’s love. Even though sin brought decay and death, nature remains a beautiful consolation for the effect of sin.

The author says, ‘“God is love” is written upon every opening bud, upon every springing grass.’ Now, you may find this a little unrealistic if you observed the world just the way it is, with the deaths, fears, poverty, natural disasters, and more.

Nevertheless, the author adds that “the world is not all sorrow and misery.”

Ellen G. White further emphasizes the coming, crucifixion, and death of Christ to save humanity. On page 11, the author states that Jesus “took man’s nature, that He might reach man’s wants.”

Christ paid the price for our redemption and only through Him can be find true reconciliation back to God.

In conceiving the height of God’s love, you might get confused or lost. I’ve tried many times to compare fully understand why God loves humanity the way he does.

Yet, I find that this is something bigger than my mind.

In Steps to Christ chapter 2, “The Sinner’s Need of Christ,” E. G. White addresses the reality that God created human beings as perfect and powerful beings.

Sadly, disobedience led to the entrance of sin. And everything changed.

The fallen Lucifer was determined to destroy God’s original design. But God wouldn’t have it.

The author says on page 18 that “the sinner could not be happy in God’s presence; he would shrink from the companionship of the holy beings.”

In essence, before sin, we always wanted everything to do with God. But the presence of sin made God’s marvelous lights a torture for us.

The Impact of Sin on the Human Existence

Have you ever wondered why the world is so messed up right now?

Insecurities keep increasing, death rates aren’t slowing down, governments are disappointing, and even families are separating. In fact, people seem to be more interested in things than in other people.

And then you ask the question, “If there’s really a God, what is he looking at?”

I can assure you, as the author emphasizes that “It is impossible for us, of ourselves, to escape the pit of sin in which we are sunken.” Add to this, “Our hearts are evil, and we cannot change them.”

As a result of this, Ellen White states that only the power of Christ can change us. God’s law is good but it cannot save us. To support this, Jacob experienced the salvation of Christ after he had cheated his brother, Esau.

Nathanael also learned from Jesus Christ that Christ is the only existing link between God and man.

Here’s the reality: we’re down here on earth. If we need to connect with heaven, we need to go through Christ. This is Ellen G. White’s position in Steps to Christ.

And the best way to do this is to “contemplate the amazing sacrifice that has been made for us!” God is “crazy” about every single soul on earth and heaven is doing every single possible thing to connect with us.

Ellen White concludes this chapter by stating that if we would become like Christ, we need to “avail ourselves of the mean provided for us.”

And that means is Jesus Christ.

Fixing the Sin Problem

In Steps to Christ chapter 3, “Repentance”, Ellen G. White describes how Christ reunites us with God.

First, she talks about true guilt, the guilt which causes us to feel truly and deeply sorry about the wrong we have done.

She makes it pretty clear that we shouldn’t repent because we’re afraid of being killed or condemned. It needs to be more than that.

Praying, God, Christianity, Belief

A little diversion to illustrate this:

I remember that as a little girl, I was always afraid of being flogged. Even when I knew that the best thing to do was admit my wrong, I often spent more time rehearsing how to ask for forgiveness.

Back then, I was ready to say I was wrong because I wasn’t ready to get flogged or punished.

Is this something you can relate with? Good.

Ellen White insists that true repentance needs to be similar to what David had. “The prayer of David after his fall, illustrates the nature of the true sorrow for sin.”

Only Christ, only the Holy Spirit can bring about this kind of repentance, which is sincere, deep, and eager for a renewal.

Here’s another amazing truth according to Ellen White: “Christ is the source of every right impulse.” You can accept Christ in your sinful state and see your sins for what they are.

A murderer may sometimes feel guilty about his crimes. He might feel terrible. But only the transforming power of Christ can make him want to stop the mean acts.

How Perfect Are You?

Don’t be quick to think that you’re sinless, Ellen G. White says. If you’d only come to Christ, “we shall see how impure we are.”

One intriguing part of this chapter is this statement, “God does not regard all sins as of equal magnitude; there are degrees of guilt in His estimation…”

Now, is this saying that some sins require more guilt than others? Yes.

But does it mean a sin is too small? No!

Or a sin is too big? No!

The true message this author communicates here is “if you see your sinfulness, do not wait to make yourself better.”

Don’t be quick to think that one sin is too small to bring consequences or too big to never be forgiven. E. G. White declares on page 36 that “Christ is ready to set us free from sin, but He does not force the will…”

Christ will NEVER force you. If you consistently reject His appeals, He would leave you be.

Honestly!

But that’s not what He wants deep down in his heart. The author yearns that you will pray to God saying, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”

Three big secrets here:

  • Be Persistent
  • Be Earnest
  • Treat your repentance as an issue of life or death

As you take the steps to be renewed, don’t think that Satan would leave you be. No way!

He would come to you and try to make you feel guilty. But Ellen G. White states that, “When Satan comes to tell you that you are a great sinner, look up to your Redeemer and talk of his merits.”

Admit that you’ve done wrong, but brag about Christ’s light. Isn’t that all you’ve got really?

Taking the Steps for Acceptance

My hubby and I have discovered a new side to forgiveness. It’s not enough to know that you did something wrong. It’s never enough to be sorry.

You need to use the right words and actions.

In chapter 4, “Confession,” Ellen G. White describes the first and most important step toward getting it right with God.

Confession is a practical and action-based step. Just like we say speaking is a productive communication skill, confession is productive.

You need to produce an innermost expression of your repentance.

Unlike the popular erroneous belief that you need to undergo “painful penances” or go through some rites, the author states that all God wants is for you to confess.

When we offend people, we must learn to ask their forgiveness. Don’t assume that they know you are sorry. Tell them.

Show them. Use the right words. Act the right way. Show them how genuine you are about your change of ways.

You cannot afford to remain proud and egoistic.

Ellen White supports this by saying, “Those who have not humbled their souls before God in acknowledging their guilt, have not yet fulfilled the first condition of acceptance.”

Be humble. Be sincere. When you confess, let it be real. REAL!!!

Don’t fake it. Or do it because you need God to grant your next wish. He has a heart too. He has feelings too.

If your confession comes from the depths of your heart, Ellen White says that it will “find its way to the God of infinite pity.”

Conditions for Acceptance with God

If you want God to forgive you, you need to truly repent and seek to be different.

Ellen G. White says that you need to tell God how deeply sorry you are, and mean it. And meaning it implies that you don’t try to defend yourself.

I recall a time when I learned that apology is useless if you have to defend yourself. Don’t come up with an excuse to explain your offense away.

On page 43, Ellen G. White refers to biblical examples such as the poor publican who were haughty and unwilling to call themselves “a sinner.”

In true confession, “there is no excuse for sin or attempt at self-justification.”

Can you be like Paul and call yourself the “Chief of sinners?”

Final Thoughts on Chapters 1-4

By now, you must have a better understanding of Steps to Christ. I can assure you that each page of this book says a whole lot more than is written on the pages.

In the Part 2 of this review, we’ll be considering “Consecration”, “Faith and Acceptance”, “The Test of Discipleship”, “Growing Up in Christ”, and “The Work and the Life.”

These following five chapters provide clarity on the additional steps that you need to take to get it right with your Creator.

Can I tell you this?

I’m still growing. I’m still learning. I’m still taking the steps to Christ.

It’s a beautiful journey, and I don’t want to travel the road alone.

So, I call you to join me as I take these steps.

Are you seeking an understanding of who you really are? Do you think there’s something about your life that’s not right? Are you ready to get real with repentance and confession?

6 Ways the COVID-19 Pandemic is Affecting the IELTS Test

Like so many things, the COVID-19 pandemic has taken its toll on the IELTS test. Usually, the British Council and MOD/IDP Australia conduct these tests up to four times in a month.

However, there’s the lockdown situation in Nigeria and other parts of the world. And this has caused the test organizing bodies to suspend the tests until further notice.

Only a few centers are currently holding the IELTS but with all necessary health measures to protect both the test takers and officials present.

What this means for prospective IELTS test takers is that preparation time is extended. It could also mean that the test dates are uncertain.

Do you have plans to take the IELTS test? In what ways is the current COVID-19 pandemic affecting your preparation for the test? Let’s talk about it.

Before you go, follow this link to get detailed information about the IELTS test dates in Nigeria. It’s a clear breakdown for the British Council and IDP centers in Nigeria.

How is Coronavirus (COVID-19) Affecting your IELTS Test Preparation?

·        Many Learners are Relaxed or Unmotivated

With the current IELTS suspension, many test takers seem relaxed about preparation. And they have every reason to. First, no one knows when the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis will become an old story.

Second, what are the chances that the IELTS test will still be needed for immigration or study purposes?

In my experience, many learners feel unwilling to continue preparing for the IELTS test. Some believe that the pressure to take the test is reduced. Besides, shouldn’t we all be more concerned about the present than the future we can’t see or even imagine?

Moreover, some IELTS test takers don’t have the motivation they once had. For instance, I teach doctors, nurses, and other persons in the healthcare line among others from other professions.

The report from some of them is that they’re too busy at the hospital. Others say that this is an opportunity to achieve other personal goals that they couldn’t achieve before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Finally, some just don’t have the push to keep learning or practicing. These days seem gloomy and uncertain. Plus, it’s difficult to concentrate on writing an IELTS essay when the number of coronavirus cases and deaths keep going up.

·        Most IELTS Tests around the World are on Hold

No questions, the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has put a great number of IELTS activities on hold. For one, the British Council had to announce the IELTS suspension on their website and Facebook page.

In fact, on this British Council page, you’ll find a lot of IELTS frequently asked questions relating to the current COVID-19 situation.

If you did book your IELTS test before the lockdown, chances are that you still haven’t taken action about it.

Send an email to this address to get more information about the IELTS test transfer or refund. And you should do this if you didn’t receive the email from them.

As for MOD/IDP Australia, you’ll find information on the suspended IELTS tests here.

MOD IDP Australia suspends IELTS tests

The same goes for British Council Asia (Singapore). Likewise, you can visit the Cambridge International page for more details as they’re the organizing body, next to British Council and IDP Australia.

The IELTS suspension is definitely a great way to keep test takers safe. It’s indeed remarkable, nonetheless, that some tests are still ongoing.

For instance, in countries where the tests are still being held, these are the preventive measures in place:

  • Reduced number of test takers in an examination room
  • Physical distancing
  • Use of face masks
  • Wide spacing of desks
  • Partitioning of CBT Rooms
  • Disinfecting and deep cleansing test rooms before and after the tests.

·        Some IELTS Trainers now Provide Free Training

One super impressive impact of the coronavirus on the IELTS test is the increased availability of free training. YouTube has always been a leading source of tutorials for IELTS especially for people who can’t take paid classes.

Some of the most reliable sources of IELTS online tutorials are IELTS Liz, FastTrack IELTS (with Asiya Miart), and IELTS Advantage (with Christopher Pell). Of course, these trainers have been training IELTS test takers long before COVID-19.

Nevertheless, I recommend them because their teaching methods are interactive, consistent, and enlightening above all.

Interestingly too, IELTS Advantage is currently organizing IELTS live Question and Answer Sessions on YouTube. Really impressive!

So, if you’re looking for free tutorials for IELTS, you can join in.

Apart from these options, you also have the free IELTS webinars organized by the British Council. They’ve been on since 31 March and they’ll end on 21 April.

Finally, you could take the Understanding IELTS courses available on FutureLearn. The Understanding IELTS Speaking course was recently concluded but you still have some time to access the training. The courses have been eye-opening for me.

On 16 April, the Understanding IELTS Reading course will commence. You can take advantage of this as well.

The bottom line – even though the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the IELTS tests, IELTS trainers are remaining proactive.

As an IELTS Instructor who has been offering both physical and virtual classes, I can continue my classes without hitches. My online classes have kept me and my learners busy pretty busy and productive.

·        People have Doubts about the Canada Immigration

In the last two to three years, Canada has welcomed more immigrants than many other countries. And the beauty of the Canada immigration programs is that they are flexible as well as possible.

However, with the recent issues relating to COVID-19 and IELTS, some individuals have raised doubts about migrating to Canada.

Some of the questions include:

  • Is migrating to Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic an option?
  • Will Canada keep issuing out ITAs?
  • Should I still try to get into the Express Entry pool?
  • Would IELTS still be a needed requirement for Canada immigration?
  • Would the IRCC make entry into Canada a bit easier?
  • Will Canada reduce the number of people who receive ITAs?

Irrespective of what your questions are, the best place to get reliable information is the IRCC website. There’s no better website to gather accurate facts.

Why raise this poin? With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the IELTS test, some think that the test will no longer be a requirement.

To save yourself any headaches of being defrauded by seemingly good people impersonating as agents or consultants, get your information from the ‘horse’s mouth.’

·        Many IELTS Trainers and Instructors are Turning to Zoom and Skype

Another way the COVID-19 pandemic is changing the IELTS test is through the training platforms. As social distancing is the new code of interaction today, IELTS learners cannot meet their trainers physically.

This has, therefore, caused many IELTS trainers to maximize Zoom and Skype for teaching.

These video conferencing platforms are proving valuable for conducting classes and ensuring that learners stay educated about the IELTS during this period.

For example, with Zoom, I’ve been able to:

  • Teach each component of the IELTS test systematically
  • Assess my learners’ performance
  • Refer to pages in the Cambridge IELTS practice books using the Share Screen option
  • Conduct joint practice sessions during lessons
  • Write text on the White Board using the Share Screen option
  • Use the Google Chrome browser for further inquiry when necessary
  • And record ongoing sessions

Among others!

In essence, if you’re looking for ways to prepare for your IELTS test during this COVID-19 crisis, connect with IELTS trainers who are making the most of this period to reach learners far and wide.

·        The IELTS Mock Test remains a Valuable Tool

Despite being the final point, online IELTS Mock tests are about the ‘saviors’ of the COVID-19 situation. Being able to prepare for your IELTS test with mock tests is a great way to have a feel of the actual test.

For one, the British Council offers free mock tests to potential IELTS test takers preparing for the computer-delivered tests. The aim is to help them get familiar with the test structure.

Whether you’re taking the paper-based test or computer-based version of the IELTS, the familiarization test is a great way to get started.

Also, takeIELTS.net offer mock tests at affordable rates. These tests are available in three packages:

  • 1 Mock test
  • 3 Mock tests
  • 5 Mock tests
TakeIELTS.net mock tests

The perks of taking the IELTS mock tests on takeIELTS.net is that you get:

  • Examiner feedback
  • Question by question analysis
  • A test report with your band score
  • Results are available in two days
  • Speaking is also tested online (with recordings)
  • Test format and timing is the same
  • Opportunities to improve your band score for the actual IELTS test

At least three of my IELTS learners took the tests during their training with me. And it greatly boosted their eventual band score. If you use my coupon code (ABabalola) at the checkout, you would get a 25% discount, and I would get a small commission.

Other Issues Relating to IELTS and the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic

Apart from the six issues you’ve read about so far, there are a few more things you need to know.

  1. If you took the test before the lockdown and need to check your IELTS test result, use this link to access the test taker portal.
  2. Some individuals think the IELTS test should henceforth be conducted online. Inasmuch as this might sound like a good idea, some experts and trainers believe that identification issues could be a concern. For instance, ascertaining the true identity of test takers (which is easy during physical tests) may be a challenge if IELTS tests now move online. Besides, the Speaking component of the test needs to be done in person.
  3. If you don’t feel like you can participate in an online IELTS tutorial right now, it’s totally fine. Don’t stress about it. The IELTS test requires concentration, time management, and reasoning. If you have kids, focusing on other serious activities may not really come easy. You can, however, educate your kids with the following activities. But if you just can’t stop thinking about how COVID-19 is going to affect your job, family or life in general, don’t take on more activities like preparing for the IELTS test.
  4. To take your IELTS with British Council, visit this page for more information.

Wrapping Up on the Impact of COVID-19 on the IELTS Test

If you had plans to take the IELTS test before or during this lockdown, I can imagine how you must feel. Plans are on hold, disrupted or unclear.

Nonetheless, remember that you’re not alone in this. And there’s always sunshine after rainfall. So, you can choose to prepare with free online tutorials or paid classes, or just suspend your IELTS preparation for the time being.

Whatever you choose, ensure that you’re home safe with your loved ones. Keep following the hygienic guidelines by CDC, NCDC, and the World Health Organization (WHO).

In all, stay hopeful that new dates for the IELTS test will be announced after the COVID-19 pandemic. And you’ll be able to take your test and make progress with your study or immigration plans.

10 Reasons Your School Should Have an Online Education Website

With the sharply rising number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases around the world, more schools and educational institutions are recognizing the need for an online education website.

Imagine if you could teach your students using Google Classroom. Think about being able to maintain your educational brand with an online presence while communicating with your learners via Google Classroom, Skype, Slack or Zoom as the case may be.

With an online education website, you’ll be leveraging educational branding via resources over the Internet. Likewise, from building a website on WordPress, Ning or Wix to getting educational content strategies, you can achieve your school’s goals.

In terms of web content, which is one of the most crucial elements in this branding process, an education copywriter is your go-to writer.

An Online Education Website: Why Your School Needs One

1.    Social Distancing

Social distancing is a phrase that has gained huge popularity in the last couple of months. And this is largely due to WHO and NCDC guidelines across the world.

The need to minimize contact with other persons or large groups has been considered as one of the ways to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

With our present reality, it means that schools have to be shut. In other words, let the kids stay home with their parents.

Now, what does this mean for your business? If you’re a school owner or an educational brand, chances are high that you’re a bit puzzled. Not about the coronavirus itself. But mainly about the future of your business.

Questions like, ‘when is this going to end?’ or ‘when will schools reopen?’ are most likely going through your head.

Here’s the truth:

Nothing is set in stone right now. You can’t see beyond your nose. All you know is today, this minute, this second. Not the next!

So, rather than worry your head about school resumption and the end of the school closure, think about making a successful education marketing plan.

Why, you ask? Read the next point.

2.    Educational Branding

At this time of our lives, it’s clear that many businesses and industries are crashing. To illustrate this, in one of his recent posts, Neil Patel shared his coronavirus industry findings.

Out of 20 industries, less than 5 (healthcare, food, pharma, and media) aren’t facing the worst of these times. While others like the travel industry had plunged deep into massive losses, other sectors such as education and technology have only suffered a tiny bit.

What this means for you as an education brand is that you can review your marketing goals to adapt to this world crisis. Brainstorm new ways to keep your business on the surface of the ‘sea rather than under’.

A good way to do this is to consider educational branding. Branding in education implies pitching your business to the ideal target audience using the right marketing strategies.

Marketing for education might not seem like a popular thing. However, if you take a look at the education statistics, you’ll be convinced to take action.

So, what you need first of all is the right content.

An approach I’d like to recommend is the 3Ds of Branding:

DESIGN – DOCUMENT – DISTRIBUTE

  • In other words, design your brand based on your previous profile to fit the Internet
  • Work with a web designer to project this information to your new website
  • Choose an education copywriter to flesh out your brand’s information (most education copywriters specialize in writing for the education market)
  • Hire a social media strategist or manager to distribute your web content or share your copies on social media platforms.

Well, I’ve probably oversimplified them, since each stage of the branding can be quite time-consuming. But really, it’s doable. Why won’t you want to stay in business?

3.    Stay in Business

Statistics on CNN show that over 6 million people are out of job at the moment. Some have been laid off while others can’t access their businesses due to the need to stay home or self-quarantine.

Apparently, as the lockdown gets strengthened around the world, many brands are struggling to stay in business. From e-commerce to fashion brands, millions of businesses are losing not only money but also investments. This BBC visual guide will help you get a good idea of it.

Now, to prevent your educational brand from also crashing, you need an online education website. Also, how does maximizing SEO help your school?

You can continue to interact with learners, parents, teachers, and investors from different parts of the world. The consequence of this is that as you maintain the connection over the Internet, Google will overtime reward you when the storm is past. With hard work and SEO for schools, you’ll make definitely Google happy.

So, creating and managing an online website for your education brand is a way of saying, ‘I’m still alive. I haven’t gone under just yet.’

The next most important factor is the impact on your learners.

4.    Keep Your Learners Engaged

With an educational website for your school, academy or institute, you can engage your learners. Additionally, with the right tools and resources, students can visit your website to take courses or classes with teachers or instructors.

Furthermore, being able to stay connected to their school matters to kids. The same way older folks and world leaders are leveraging Zoom and Skype to stay productive; kids need an interface where they can feel like their world still exists somewhere out there.

If learners can visit your website, see your school logo, anthem, motto, popular education quotes or other things that remind them of school, it’d be great.

More importantly, you could redirect learners to Google Classroom for learning purposes.

Google Classroom doesn’t require so much. You only need to

  • Create or Select your Google account
  • Create class
  • Add class name (e.g. GIANTS)
  • Enter Section (e.g. UPPER BASIC)
  • Indicate the Subject (e.g. ENGLISH LANGUAGE)
  • Add Room (e.g. ROOM B)
  • Click create.

When you’ve completed this phase, you’ll be presented with the created class information and a class code. The class code is a combination of letters and numbers. Students can join the class using this class code.

On this new page, you’ll notice the input area where you can ‘share something with your class.’

Just beneath that, you’ll see the area for communicating with your students. Basically, this section allows you to send out announcements and respond to students’ comments.

Five other perks of Google Classroom are:

  • You can track upcoming classes in the dashboard
  • You’re able to select a theme or upload a photo (of your school maybe)
  • You can add your teachers and students under ‘People’
  • Assignments or classwork can be easily given or assessed
  • And tracking marks is easy with the use of ‘Marks’.

5.    Be Visible to a Wider Audience

Adapting your school to the Internet is a brilliant way to reach a wider audience. Try seeing this marketing strategy as an opportunity to connect with more learners or attract more forward-thinking investors.

When your school has an online education website, you aren’t limited by time or space. Geographical location no longer matters.

The Internet doesn’t care so much about whether you’re in a small village in the south-west of Nigeria or you’re in a big city in the United States.

What really counts right now is your ability to maximize SEO and the best search engine practices to boost your visibility. Copywriters who provide content for the education sector are the best people to work with at this stage.

Besides the fact that education copywriting specialists know the content writing keywords that apply to education, they are also reliable for helping you research keywords and the latest trends in the education industry.

Overall, an online website for your school brand will position you right in front of those you truly care about. And how do you show them you care?

6.    Show Your Learners that You Care

The first step in assuring your learners that you care is by creating an online website. With an education website, you prove to your learners, their parents or guardians, and the world that you’re unstoppable.

COVID-19, social distancing, quarantine or the lockdown are all not enough to get you off the lips of your audience.

But it doesn’t stop at the website. As your online education website keeps getting built and grows in richer content, you should encourage social shares.

When people interact with the content on your website, ask them to share with friends and family on social media.

There’s no denying the fact that Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn are the second homes of everyone at home.

So, the best place to find your audience and prove to them that you care is to meet them where they are.

How?? As you set up your school website, maybe on WordPress,

  • Create social media accounts on at least any four of the above platforms
  • Choose your social media platforms based on credible data about where your audience truly is
  • As you produce content, share them on these platforms
  • Ensure that your education copywriter adds calls to action that persuade readers to share your content with their loved ones
  • Keep monitoring your engagement on social media
  • Respond to feedback and questions
  • Don’t limit yourself to sharing only educational content. Share content that project positivity, hope, and the willingness to combat isolation, depression or fear.

What do you think these steps would result in? Revenue growth!

7.    Grow Your Revenue

For each day that we spend in lockdown, many businesses around the world are losing revenue.

In addition, no new profits are being made. So, the question is, ‘how do I preserve my revenue even if I can’t make more money during the coronavirus (COVID-19)?’

Have an online education website!

With your school now on the internet, you can communicate with your learners, their parents, and teachers. Also, you can build more relationships with investors or educators in other parts of the world.

More so, by consistently sharing educational-based content, you’re keeping your name on the mind of the people who engage with your content.

In the long run, you’ll be well-positioned to grow your revenue when it’s time to get back to work. And the next point is closely tied to this.

8.    Retain Valuable Teachers

With an online education website, you’ll earn the trust of your teachers. Schools are quiet. Classrooms are empty, obviously.

Many teachers during this period are taking the time to do other personal things or take online courses to boost their skills and knowledge.

Now, seeing their school online will definitely give teachers hope that their lives aren’t ending just yet. For teachers, when you create an education website:

  • They don’t have to stop teaching
  • They see alternative ways to communicate with their learners
  • They’ll improve their use of technology for teaching
  • Depression from not teaching would be sent far, far away
  • Learning how to teach online courses becomes vital
  • Lockdown doesn’t mean locked out of their jobs
  • They’re well-positioned to teach other learners from outside their state or region!

With these promises of a better today in spite of the millions of COVID-19 cases, your valuable teachers will stick with you. They’ll eagerly offer their expertise and knowledge on Google Classroom or whatever platform you choose to use.

Best of all – your teachers are the ideal point of contact for people seeking to know more about your school. Ultimately, your online education website is going to help you build something more – your online presence.

9.    Build Your Online Presence

Having done so much and put so much effort into creating a strong online website for your education brand, you most likely want to see results.

The best of all results, besides growing your revenue, is building a strong online presence.

What are the upsides of an online presence?

  • Reach more people
  • Stay visible
  • Boost revenue

As your education copywriter puts up more educational copies on your school blog, you become visible to more people.

And when more people see your brand’s website, they’ll want to tell their friends and family (and foes, if applicable) about you.

The bottom line: the more quality you offer, the more search engines will love you. And they’ll show you to a greater audience. Equally, the greater audience will share you with even more people. And you’ll become a celebrity in your own right.

The biggest perk of all is what you get in the final point.

10.  Become an Industry Authority

Your online education website will make you an industry authority. While this might sound exaggerated, it’s the truth.

Becoming an industry authority is simply about quality, consistency, and care. Take a look at the educational sites on this blog. They have rich content as well as powerful, persuasive designs.

Tell people you have what they need. Next, keep giving it to them. And never stop reminding them that you’re doing it for their good.

You don’t have to replace your competitions. In fact, you may not be able to get them out of the way for several months.

But if you’re faithful to your education brand, and you work with a successful education marketing plan, you’ll create your voice.

And when your voice is distinct, you’ve closer to the peak.

You’ll be an industry authority, not limited by time or space.

Are You Convinced about Creating an Online Education Website?

With the ten reasons patiently and carefully discussed above, I’d assume you’re thinking about acting on it already.

But don’t be so quick. Count your costs first. You need:

  • Money
  • The right team
  • Time
  • Patience
  • Information

These five factors should guide you as you prepare to have your educational brand on the Internet. It’s never enough to have a website with content. As a matter of fact, you need more than keywords or tools.

The first step in the right direction is to talk to an education copywriter. Consult with a copywriter who offers education copywriting services for anyone in the education sector.

  • Ask the right questions.
  • Talk about your business.
  • Create a scope.
  • Set a timeline.
  • Request the education content writing quote.
  • Find out the best platform to host your education brand.
  • Take baby steps toward surviving COVID-19.

Teach your Children Igbo Using BiaWaZo, a Fun, Online Learning Website

Language learning is an activity with so many benefits. From learning new words and ideas to appreciating the culture of other people, language learning is fun. And BiaWaZo is a new online learning website that’s making this achievable for parents and their kids.

While doing some study on synonyms for my IELTS learners, I came across an ad by BiaWaZo.com, inviting parents to enroll their kids in their virtual language learning program. As a result of my interest in education, I dug a little deeper. You’ll learn about my findings in this post.

BiaWaZo: Learn Igbo Online

As parents around the world worry about their kids being out of school, some parents are being proactive and providing solutions to the out-of-school dilemma. And an example of such solutions is BiaWaZo, a product of Akwukwo.

BiaWazo.com is an online language learning website for kids, and some parents seeking to learn Igbo and other languages.

It’s true that English and Chinese are two of the world’s most spoken languages. This is why so many of us keep adding to our lexicon and seeking ways to speak, listen, read, and write better.

Despite the obvious perks of English and Chinese, local or African languages shouldn’t be abandoned, otherwise they could go extinct.

Learning Languages

With BiaWaZo, Igbo, one of the top three Nigerian languages (besides Yoruba and Hausa) is preserved. By the way, Nigeria has over 400 languages!

This website offers virtual language learning to both native and non-native speakers of Igbo. So, whether you’re Ibo, French or English, your kids can learn Igbo on BiaWazo.com.

Recently launched in early March, this site offers three methods of learning:

  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing

Each of these methods are focused on helping kids to learn Igbo words, phrases, sentences, and ideas. With the lessons and activities on the site, your kids can develop their speaking, reading, and writing skills.

Why Learn Igbo with BiaWaZo.com?

You’re probably wondering if I have a relationship with the owners of this site. Not at all! I’ve only recently come across this site and done my research.

Why BiaWaZo?

  • With the widespread coronavirus crisis, kids are at home with their parents. Yes, this would have been holiday time for kids in Nigeria. But if that were the case, many kids would be holidaying with their grandparents or visiting cousins here or there. Millions of parents around the world need help with their kids right now. BiaWaZo is offering the help you so much need.
  • Another reason is the inability of many Nigerian kids to speak their native language. Growing up, I remember communicating mainly in English with my parents and siblings. English shaped our world, despite the fact that we are Yoruba. It wasn’t until I had my high school education outside Lagos (but still within the South West) that I picked up my mother tongue. And I don’t blame my parents – they did what they thought best. BiaWaZo.com will help your kids learn their mother tongue.
  • Learning Igbo at home needs to be FUN and PRACTICAL. I’ve never really been an admirer of the basic educational system where there are restrictions on curricula and syllabuses. BiaWaZo allows kids to learn in a fun way. The video lessons are filled with animations and step-by-step learning materials which make it easy for kids to learn gradually.
  • Lessons on BiaWaZo.com are accompanied by musicals to keep the practice entertaining and easy to follow. With a short attention span, kids need additional stimulants to encourage them to focus on a thing at a time. And music is just perfect for these two- to three-minute videos!
  • The three language levels and activities are central to language learning. Irrespective of the language, speaking, reading, and writing are skills you can’t miss. Languages are practical, and the learning approach on BiaWaZo offers an interactive platform where children can listen, read along, speak aloud, and write as they take the lessons.
  • Kids can continue their learning on BiaWaZo’s YouTube channel, where they’ll learn with Khez Gbugu, one of the top Igbo learners on BiaWaZo.

What Parents Think about BiaWaZo

From the reviews of BiaWaZo.com, parents of kids who are learning Igbo on this virtual language learning website are thrilled.

Besides the fact that their kids learnt their numbers, simple words and other phrases easily, the parents themselves have been picking up some Igbo too.

Some of the 5 most common benefits described are:

  • Convenient
  • Seamless
  • Fun learning
  • Interactive
  • Engaging

The Bottom Line

Learning Igbo can be easier than you imagined. Although the owners of BiaWaZo.com reside in Houston, Texas, their kids are learning their native language. Remarkable, right!

Won’t you like to give your kids this same opportunity? You only need your subscription fee, a personal computer or tablet, and Internet connection. Kids would also need their books and pencil/pen to make notes as they learn.

5 Best Homeschooling Ideas to Educate your Kids While Working from Home

With schools shut and businesses closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, nothing seems the same anymore. As parents, how can you educate your kids while working from home? Are you ready to homeschool?

Educating Your kids while Working from Home

Adults and kids are equally affected. For all schools around the world, the coronavirus pandemic has altered the year 2020. Statistics show that over 850 million children are sitting at home in a bid to protect them from the spread of this malicious disease.

Many parents are confused about how to stay productive with their work while also attending to their kids. Imagine attending a meeting on Zoom video conferencing and your child bumps in, screaming his head off because his toy fell down the staircase.

I have a little son. So I know how feel. In this post, you’ll learn 5 tricks that can help you keep your kids busy and happily engaged so you can focus on working effectively.

5 Ideas for Educating Your Kids while Working from Home

  • Read Books with them 15-30 Minutes daily

I know that you probably feel like you don’t have the patience to sit with an impatient, short-attention-span kid and read. But you could at least try.

Little Girl Writing on a Paper with a Pencil

Besides the fact that reading with your kid will help you appreciate your children’s teachers, this experience will expose you to your child’s strength and weaknesses.

For example, my son is 4 months old. And I know reading isn’t his thing yet. But it’s one of the best ways to entertain him so that I could focus on my own thing later.

He has some of the Peter and Jane A, B, and C series. And a Kids Bible. While I am interested in reading with him, all he wants to do is put my fingers in his mouth or put the pages of the book in his mouth. But I still spend time with him.

And when I have to work in my workspace, he doesn’t look for me. He just keeps chattering on to the flowers on the curtains and his toys.

My point – reading to your child can be fun for them, maybe not for you. But it’s also a brilliant way to help them learn words, meanings, ideas, and other things.

The benefit for you is that they won’t miss you when you have to attend to work matters in your home office or study.

  • Exercise with your Kids for an Hour every day

Exercising with your child daily is another way to help them learn during this period of school closure. Exercise keeps the body alert, active, and renewed.

Spending an hour to engage in physical activities including running up and down the stairs or pressups is definitely worth it.

The perks of this is that your kids will be healthier and happier while at home. In addition, their brains will be actively prepared to participate in other meaningful tasks that the day may bring.

  • Play Indoor Soccer or Other Games

Playing games is another way to help your kids learn in these times. Although this isn’t the typical thing kids do at school, you can allow them play Scrabble to learn new words and their meanings or Chess to boost their thinking capability.

Alternatively, you could convert your living room, corridor or balcony to a football pitch. Such games including Legos are excellent for shaping the mind, the body, and the family of course.

Additionally, sporting activities are great for educating kids in that they allow your kids to take advantage of a small space and transform it into something valuable.

  • Dance to Music and See Movies

Listening to music during this COVID-19 pandemic is an excellent way to let go of the stress and anxiety. For kids, it means a more entertaining way to learn and relax. Dance and express yourself like nobody cares, because that’s the truth.

Seeing movies like Moana, Frozen or even Boss Baby can be great. Why? Your kids could develop the grit, determination and power the characters in these movies exhibited.

I’ve seen Moana so many times and I can’t help but appreciate the zeal and motivation of the little girl. Standing alone even when one’s parents think differently isn’t something many kids can do.

  • Encourage Painting, Drawing or Other Skills

Yesterday, after learning how to use Zoom, I saw the movie ‘The Windermere Children’ with my husband. Painting and drawing were used to expose the thoughts and psychology of over 300 children who had survived World War II.

Many of these Jewish kids had lived on scraps and watched their parents die. But after they were taken and sheltered by the British Government, they began to express themselves through different means – playing soccer, learning English, and drawing.

Creating an environment where your kids can draw and paint would allow them express thoughts, pains and disappointment about school closure.

Whether they’re unhappy and need to explore, or they just need to stay busy, these arts would work perfectly.

Wrapping Up

As you work from home during these periods, don’t leave your kids behind. Educate them with what you have. Be a part of their learning process until school resumes.

Until e-learning becomes a common means of learning for children in this part of the world, let’s leverage what we have. Add these five tricks to your daily schedule and you’ll be well on your way to enjoying a fun-filled homeschooling experience.

Benefits of Remote Working during COVID-19

It’s no longer news that COVID-19 has turned the world upside down. From Wuhan city in China to hundreds of countries around the world, coronavirus has left many families feeling devastated. Businesses, schools, and other organizations are suffering. But how can you maximize remote working?

In simple words, remote working means working from home. You don’t have to go on transit, pack your lunch or worry about being late to work. Remote working during COVID-19 is the new normal as governments of many countries have enforced lockdown policies or stay home orders.

With this reality, why should you leverage your home environment to work and stay productive during COVID-19?

  1. Working from home saves time. Forget about rushing out of the house because of traffic congestion.
  2. Remote working encourages a higher dependence on technology. When you work from home, you get to use more technological devices to get things done. For instance, you might adopt Zoom or Skype for team communication.
  3. Staying home is a perfect way to define your goals. As working from home could be really distracting, the ideal solution is to set your goals and break them down into tiny bits. Ensure that you know what you’ll be doing on a particular day. And achieve it.
  4. Remote working demands more concentration. Inasmuch as your kid or your phone needs your attention, working from home forces you to stay true to one task at a time. It takes away the need to leave your desk because you can figure out one thing within a certain period, and thereafter take the break you desperately need.
  5. Working from home helps you to create time for the ‘less serious’ things. Unlike in the office where it’s all business, deadlines, and serious looks, remote work makes you more friendly with yourself and family. No matter how busy you might get, you’ll always remember to blow your spouse a kiss or ruffle your son’s hair.

In sum, with remote working being the new normal in these unsettling times, it’s advisable that you take advantage of what’s before you. COVID-19 isn’t here to stay. So don’t get lax and unproductive. Keep learning!
